James “Jim” Francis Doherty of Horsham passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington. He was a resident of Horsham for almost 30 years and passed at the age of 58.
James is survived by his wife, Mary; children John, Maggie, and Colleen; parents, Ethel and Francis; brothers John and Tom; sisters Mary Levine and Tricia Rooney; brothers-in-law Irv Levine and Kevin Rooney; nephew Kevin Levine; niece and goddaughter Suzanne Levine; goddaughter Samantha Wendler; 25 other nieces and nephews; and 11 other brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Born in Akron, OH and raised in Wilmington, DE, Jim attended Salesian High School, was active in Eagle Scouts, sports, and Rockwellian mischief as a boy.
He graduated from the University of Delaware with a BS in Chemistry in ’75. By 1981 he started working at Penn Color, where he stayed for 30 years. He developed products for existing and new customers, joined colleagues in production, sales and his technical staff in serving customers in the United States and abroad. His talents allowed him to travel to Europe and China to give technical presentations and entertain all with his impressive knowledge and wit.
Jim savored visiting New England, particularly York Beach, Maine. He loved the ocean and sailing as well as golf, cycling, and reading about history. He was a dedicated member of his parish, St Catherine of Siena in Horsham, where he was active in the Pre-Cana marriage preparation program and coordinator with his wife for 25 years. He served as a lector and was known as the friendly man who served seafood at the parish carnival every year.
He was a devoted father to his children John, Maggie, and Colleen, and Jim always carried the memory of his first child Tommy, who died as an infant. He and his wife were active in the non-profit UNITE, Inc. which gives support to those touched by the loss of an infant or during pregnancy.
Beyond being a dedicated son and loving father, James was an adoring husband to his wife Mary to whom he was married for 34 years. They enjoyed many adventures together and were the closest during his final struggles with his health.
