Anna Templeton Obituary

Anna J. Templeton (nee Detz), 87, of Roslyn passed on April 21, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 56 years (at the time of his passing in 2013), James V. Templeton Sr.

She is survived by her children Cynthia A. Gallagher (Michael), James V. Templeton Jr. (Anne), and Mark E. Templeton (Colleen), her grandchildren Matthew (Kelly), Daniel (Helen), Mary, Jaclyn, Victoria, James III, and Patricia, her great grandchildren Brooke, and Benjamin Gallagher, a brother Joseph Detz, and many nieces and nephews.
Anna was born on May 3, 1933, the youngest child of Mary (nee Hais) and Julius Detz in New Windsor, NY. In addition to Joe (Louise), her siblings included Frank (Dorothy), Josephine (DellaMarca), Helen (Frank Koning) and Stella (Albert Irwin).

She is a 1951 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. Her first post-graduate job was at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, first in New York, and then in Philadelphia.

Anna met her future husband when he served in the Air Force and had weekend duty at Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh. Following their wedding at St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church on October 19, 1957 in Newburgh, and honeymoon in Miami, FL, Anna and Jim settled in Philadelphia and then Roslyn, in 1964. A homemaker and stay-at-home mom, Anna started selling Avon in 1959 and was a proud President’s Club Member for over 50 years. Having raised her three children, Anna then worked outside the house as a secretary in an elementary school, and for many years, as a Montgomery County District Court clerk in Abington.

While their children were growing up, Anna and Jim spent week-long Summer family vacations in Wildwood, NJ, and later started going to Atlantic City, where Anna enjoyed playing the slot machines in the casinos. She also was a regular bingo and daily evening lottery player. With friends, she frequently played cards, including her favorite game, contract rummy. A long-time parishioner at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Roslyn, Anna and Jim traveled a lot with the Leisure Club, and Anna continued to attend their meetings until the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled them. The love of her life, Jim also was the perfect polka partner for Anna, and the couple took up square dancing in the late 1980s, and they do-si-doed for around a decade.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass on Tuesday April 27, 2021 at 10:30am at Queen of Peace RC Church, 820 North Hills Avenue, Ardsley, PA 19038.  Viewing in church from 9:30am to 10:15am. Both will be livestreamed at https://masslivestream.com/churches/qofpeacechurch.
