Barbara Jane “Barbie” Dent passed away on October 3, 2025, in Abington, Pennsylvania, surrounded by her family. She was 66 years old.
Born on August 6, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, Barbie’s life was marked by a deep sense of joy, stubborn determination, and an unmistakable presence. Barbie was a person with Down syndrome and required care throughout her life, but that never stopped her from making sure everyone knew exactly what she wanted. It was Barbie’s world, and we were lucky to live in it.
She found joy in the sparkle of Mardi Gras beads in her hands, the salty breeze and warm sand of the beach, and the pure magic of Disney World. Imago dei means ‘made in the image of God,’ and Barbie, like us all, is a reflection of God’s nature. Barbie’s guileless heart and resilient spirit made an impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family would like to thank the staff of KenCrest for the profound care they provided Barbie in her adult years, and the staff of Jefferson Abington Hospital for their help in her final days.
Barbie was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Hall Dent and Patricia Rose (Gillespie) Dent. She is survived by her brother David Dent and his wife Rhonda VanDyke, Dave’schildren Katie Byers-Dent, Aimee Byers-Dent; Michael Byers-Dent (Micala Polzin partner); Caelan MacArthur (Francesca DeCain spouse); her grandniece Izzy Byers-Dent and grandnephew Teddy Davis. Barbie will be remembered always with love, laughter, and gratitude for the lessons and light she brought into the lives of those around her.
A celebration of Barbie’s life will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at John J Bryers Funeral Home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Internment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville, Ohio.
