Douglas Smith was born on August 15, 1972, in Armstrong County in Western Pennsylvania to Douglas L. and Andrea Smith.
Growing up, Doug was a multi-sport athlete. Whatever sport was in season, he participated. Even as a teenager, he realized he loved coaching sports as much as playing them. Coaching eventually became a big part of his life and legacy.
Doug graduated from IUP, where he met his wife, Michele. They married on June 17, 2000, and were blessed with three sons – Andrew, Nicholas, and Owen. For many years, Doug taught Spanish at Bucks County Technical High School while coaching track and cross country at Upper Moreland High School. When an opportunity arose to join Upper Moreland’s faculty as a Spanish teacher, he happily accepted. There, Doug became more than an educator and coach: he was a mentor, a source of encouragement, and a positive presence in the lives of so many students and colleagues.
Doug was a devoted husband, father, son, uncle, friend, and “outlaw.” He will be warmly remembered for his joyous approach to life. Friends and family could always count on Doug to bring a smile and lighten the mood. There are not enough words to express the kindness he showed to loved ones and strangers alike.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Michele (Kernen); his sons, Andrew, Nicholas, and Owen; and his parents, Douglas L. and Andrea Smith. Though an only child, he was embraced by a large and loving extended family, including his father-in-law, William Kernen (Carol Tomaski), his brothers-in-law, John (Barbara), Steven (Lisa) and his nieces and nephews, Kyle, Zachary, Ally, and Alessandra.
Doug’s impact on others will not be forgotten, and he will be greatly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday evening March 26, 2026 from 6pm to 8pm at the John J. Bryers Funeral Home, 406 Easton Rd, Willow Grove PA 19090 and on Friday March 27, 2026 from 9am to 10:45am at Queen of Peace RC Church 820 N Hills Ave, Glenside, PA 19038. Doug's Funeral Service will follow at 11am at Queen of Peace RC Church.
Interment will be private.
