Gerald Johnson Obituary

Gerald Kent Johnson (Jerry, Dad, Granddad, Caleb, Marco) went home to his Lord on Saturday, October 22, 2022 after his courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia.  Jerry was born on May 31, 1941 in Port Arthur, Texas. He lived in Port Arthur during his youth, before moving to Duncan, Oklahoma with his bride of 57 years, Cherie (D’Abadie) Johnson. The family lived in Duncan until relocating to Ponca City, OK and later Dresher, PA to be closer to their children as Jerry’s health declined. Jerry attended Lamar Tech college and earned a degree in Industrial Engineering; he worked for Halliburton for over 35 years where he spent the entirety of his career. His military service was spent serving in the National Guard. Jerry’s legacy continues with his sons Bret, Ben, and Jason Johnson.

Though an engineer by aptitude and career, Jerry’s identity was mostly cemented in his family, community, and sports. His time on this Earth was spent sharing his delight for fun and he would often have a twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes as he thought of another way to bring joy to those around him. Jerry was an expert at games and always looked for new toys to share with the children. His personality was one of a coach; he was a natural athlete and enjoyed coaching tennis and playing football, golf, scuba diving, and going fishing. Jerry enjoyed strategy games, even before they were popular, and Civil War games were his favorite. His grandchildren and the children at churches he attended were blessed by his imagination and his ability to entertain with games and activities. Jerry (Grandad) always traveled with a bag of wonderful toys (Arrow copters, balloons, treasure trails) for his grandchildren, whose eyes lit up when he arrived.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Cherie, siblings, Joe Johnson, and Joyce Scott and her husband Edwin. His 3 boys and their spouses: Bret and Jeri, Ben and Angie, and Jason and Tonya.  His 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at The Christian Center in Duncan, OK on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 11:00am. The memorial service will be followed by a celebration of life luncheon, where Cherie and the family look forward to hearing your stories about Jerry. Family and friends are encouraged to wear Jerry’s favorite color, which is blue.

To honor Jerry, we encourage you to stop and look at the world through the eyes of a child. The wonder and imagination they see is how Jerry lived his life. He saw the beauty in the simple things and could make a game out of anything (no electronics needed). Jerry lived his life with a child’s heart.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an organization that reflected Jerry; 3 suggestions are Lewy Body Dementia Association (lbda.org), Andrew Womack Ministry (awmi.net)  or Tim Keller’s Ministry (gospelinlife.com).
