Obituary for Jospeh "Judson" Hagele
Joe Hagele, often called Judson when he was younger, was the second child of Anton and Forence. His sister Holly was their first. His father had two children from his first marriage, Evelyn and Raymond. Holly had two children from her first marriage, Dawn and Paul. Sadly Joe never knew or was aware he was an uncle and had many neices, nephews, cousins. He showed much promise when he was young, however nature altered his course. His family did their best to care for him at home, but they became overwhelmed. He was placed in a mental institution which was common practice for the day. His family tried to visit as often as they were permitted and able. After the death of their mother Florence, Holly became guardian. While she was still in Philadelphia, she would visit. Joe did not know she was his sister but a kind lady who would bring him food. My brother and I were not permitted to visit due to our ages. About thirty-four years ago, he was removed from institutional care and the SPIN( Special People in Northeast), took over his care. They slowly made him feel like a person again. He was well liked. He inherited a beautiful singing voice. My grandfather Anton would sing male vocals in silent movie theatres. He was a good dancer, also an inherited family gift. Shortly after he was settled in his new place, we moved away from Philadelphia making physical visits more difficult. My mother Holly, decided to call him on his birthday and Christmas and send him gifts. I managed to see him in 1999. He did not know who I was but liked the animal crackers. We sang a bit. After my mother's death, I became his guardian. I was able to "know" him through communication with the compassionate staff of SPIN. He passed away on February 1, 2023, in the ICU ward of Nazareth Hospital. His medical team proivided him the best they could and were also very compassionate. He is finally at peace and was able to live out the rest of his life in dignity. Be at peace Uncle Judson. - Dawn
