John Francis Thompson, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Abington, PA, with his beloved wife of 68 years, Maryann, at his side. Born on January 24, 1936, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Francis and Mary Thompson (Kane), and a brother and friend to his seven siblings. John graduated from North Catholic High School in Philadelphia in 1953. He married Maryann (Mullarkey) in 1957. They moved to Saint John of the Cross Parish in Roslyn, PA, where they raised five children. John worked for the Abington Police Department as a sergeant and detective. Upon retirement, John and Maryann moved to the Pocono Mountains.
He followed the lifelong desire of his heart to dedicate himself more fully to the work of the Roman Catholic Church, which he loved deeply. He was ordained a deacon in May 2000 for the Diocese of Allentown, PA. He served the faithful at Saint Peter the Fisherman Church in Lake Harmony, PA, and ran the food pantry at Saint Joseph’s Church in Jim Thorpe, PA. Over the last 30 years of his life, he made it his priority to teach the Doctrine of Living Life in God’s Most Holy Will on Earth as it is Lived in Heaven, which he did through word and example. John loved people. He always had a story to tell, a song in his heart, and a kind word to share. He loved God from an early age and shared his faith with whomever he met along the way, including and especially his family, who will be forever grateful for his example and his love.
John is survived by Maryann, his wife of 68 years; his children, Maureen (Fred Lomady), Donna Marie (Gregory Hober), Mary (Ronald Trudeau), Sheila (William Petrucci), and Sean (Maggie); 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; his brother Thomas (Carol); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marion and Elizabeth, and his brothers, Francis, Joseph, William, and James.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on June 4, 2026 from 10am to 10:45am at St. Catherine of Siena RC Church, 321 Witmer Road, Horsham PA 19044. His Funeral Mass will follow at 11am.
Interment will be in HIllside Cemetery in Roslyn.
