My GI Joe
37 years ago, I met my Joe at the New Jersey shore house that I rented with my girlfriends. Months later a friend fixed us up. I didn't remember Joe, he remembered me. 5 months later we were married.., crazy but it worked out. I loved that other women fell for his handsome shy preppy looks. And he loved that other men liked my English accent.
We travelled the world thanks to my BA concessions and in between work and travel we converted houses at weekends, enough to buy a shore house.
Every year, at our Ocean City, New Jersey house on the bay, Joe would construct an elaborate theme for the Night in Venice Competition, we even won a coveted prize once. Our friends flocked there, all in costume for the "Old Spice Girls," the "Shippendales," "Hillbilly Hoedown," etc etc.
Those were the best of times, for many years.
We retired and enjoyed even more travel, and life couldn't have been better.
Now, Joe is no longer. He has suffered many ailments over the last 10 years, primarily as a result of the Vietnam War. And on September 5th, he passed away at 81 years of age.
Joe has specified that he wants no fuss or bother for his funeral, and that it should be limited to family and special friends.
However, he did request that in lieu of flowers and donations, that friends and family perform a random act of kindness in his name.
Rest in peace, dear Joe….see you ‘upstairs.'
Love always, Pauline
