Margaret Mary (Dougherty) Carroll

Margaret “Peggy”  Carroll, a resident of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania  for most of her life,  passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in Voorhees, New Jersey.  She is survived by her children,  Michael (Linda) of Sacramento, California,  Francis of Hatboro, Pennsylvania and  Joan Scavuzzo (Charles) of Swedesboro) and son-in-law Richard Franklin.  Grandchildren are Sam Scavuzzo (Hannah),  Caroline Scavuzzo, Ana Scavuzzo, Brendan Carroll, Sofia Margaret Carroll,   Michael F. Carroll and Thomas Franklin.    Great grandchildren are Maggie Datz and Clara Datz.  She is also survived by sister Eileen Troxell and brother Jerry Dougherty (Kathy) and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Dougherty and was proceeded by her beloved husband, Francis Carroll and daughter Kathleen Carroll and brothers Thomas Dougherty and John Dougherty as well as her brother and sister-in-law, Cormac and Virginia Walsh.

She was the strong, wise and loving matriarch of our family.    She loved her family deeply and was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.   She had a long and happy marriage to husband Frank until his death in 2009.   They were married in 1955 and raised their four children in their house on Andrea Drive, in which she remained until she was unable to maintain independent living.    The Carroll house was the gathering place for the neighborhood kids and they were all welcomed by Peggy and Frank.   They lived the idea of “it takes a village” long before the phrase was fashionable and Peggy would keep a watchful eye on the kids and didn’t hesitate to call out those who transgressed in a loving way.   She stayed home to manage the household until her children were teenagers and then worked in a number of positions until she retired at 54.

Peggy was very proud of her Irish Catholic heritage and made two trips to Ireland – one on her 25th wedding anniversary,  and again on her 50th wedding anniversary. The second trip included children and grandchildren – a group of sixteen!    When not spending time with family, she kept busy with cross word puzzles,  a wide range of reading, especially mysteries and biographies.   She was a great fan of Turner Classic Movies.

She will live on in our hearts forever as she is now reunited with Frank and daughter Katie and family.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation on Saturday October 12, 2024 from 930am to 10:15am at the St. David RC Church, 316 Easton Road, Willow Grove PA 19090.  A Memorial Mass will follow at 10:30am.

Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
