Margaret McMonagle Obituary

Margaret A. (Conway) McMonagle

September 6, 1930 ~ March 15, 2022 (age 91)

Margaret 'Peg' Conway was born on September 6, 1930 to James J. and Delia (nee Conboy) Conway.  She had nine older siblings (Mark died in infancy)--Mary McGeehan, Mike, Bill, Jim, Owen (known as Steve), Tom, Rita Fitzpatrick, Bernie, John and a younger brother, Bob.  The Conway family lived on 27th Street, between W. Allegheny and W. Lehigh Streets, in the area known as the 'Swampoodle' section of Philadelphia.

Peg attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and then John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School.  After school, she and her girlfriends spent time at Kate's to order a soda and dance to the jukebox. Peg rarely missed the dances held at the local high schools the Irish dances held in Philadelphia.

At one of those dances she met her future husband, Daniel McMonagle.  After graduating from Hallahan in 1948, Peg worked at the Broad Street Trust Bank while Dan served in the Army.  They married on May 15, 1954 and bought a house in the Olney section of Philadelphia.  They had seven children--Maureen, Susan, Patrice, Megan, Kathleen, Dan and Sheila.  In 1967, they moved to Glenside where their youngest son, Patrick, was born.

Dan died in 2000 and Peg remained at the family home until a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease made it necessary to move to Meadowood Retirement Community and Assisted Living facility in Worcester.  She received loving care there and we will be forever grateful for how each staff member at Meadowood treated her like a family member.

Last week, Peg was placed in hospice care and died peacefully on Tuesday, March 15th.  She is survived by her children--Maureen, Susan, Patrice, Megan, Kathleen, Dan, Sheila and Patrick; her sons-in-law Tom Haggerty, Jim Schlupp, the late John Young and Gihon Reape; her daughters-in-law, the late Courtney McMonagle, and Nikki McMonagle.  She was proud of each and every one of her 15 grandchildren.  In addition to her beloved husband Dan, Peg was predeceased by her eleven siblings. She is survived by her brother, John Conway (Peg) and her sister-in-law, Norma Jean Rearden.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation on Monday, March 21, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Helena Church, 1489 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422 followed by her Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will be private.
