Mario Govan Obituary

In Loving Memory of Mario Govan

April 12, 1961 – March 5, 2025

Mario Preston Govan, was born in San Antonio, Texas, on April 12, 1961, to Julius Rembert Govan and Gloria Pearnell Walker. He was the sixth of nine children and the fourth son.

Mario was deeply respected and reciprocated that respect with kindness and sincerity. He had an unwavering presence and a heart full of appreciation for those around him.

Throughout his life, Mario was blessed with many angels who provided him with loving care. For the past 12 years, Mario has resided in a residential group home operated by SPIN Inc (Special People In the Northeast) where he enjoyed a degree of independence, building friendships with both the housemates and staff,  all of whom loved engaging with Mario, who could sometimes give them 'a run for their money,' often challenging their authority. As he'd say "he was the boss of the house," since he was older than everyone. Together they helped introduce him to new experiences, including a memorable trip to Maryland and the National Aquarium, as well as  local outings to the malls and parks.

Throughout his life, his siblings came together and shared various caretaking roles. His older sister, Vanessa, took on the role of a steadfast guardian, ensuring a structured and (enriched)/rich life, and looking out for his well-being. His brother, Sam, faithfully stepped in when needed, providing assistance and unwavering support. His sister, Johnette, also welcomed him into her home while raising her children Mario looked forward to his bi-weekly outings with his brother in law, Louis, going to the barber, sharing lunch including onion rings and a "good cup of coffee" often at Red Robin, where the waiter Ramses prepped a fresh pot for him the moment he walked in.

Early on, as a child in West Philadelphia, Mario was sometimes known by the nickname, Elephant, given to him by his mother because of his incredible strength. Later, he would be warmly called Motty or Motty-O. Those who knew him appreciated and loved the essence of Mario.

Mario rarely missed going to the neighborhood churches while living in Germantown, and loved taking the microphone to sing gospel music to his heart’s content, especially "Praise the Lord Everybody". His faith and joy were evident in his presence, lighting up any room he entered. He also loved playing his keyboard, listening to  the 'oldies', (recently talking about James Brown's moves), and was a binge viewer of the sitcom Sanford and Son, often asking if 'you' had watched the show, and sharing a ready recitation of one of Sandford's antics and following with his hearty laugh!

Over the last ten years, Mario cherished the opportunity to work, and was proud of his job at Steve Stein’s Famous Deli, where he was valued by both staff and patrons. Mario often felt like the boss of the establishment, taking his responsibilities seriously, never willingly missing his scheduled work time, and he enjoyed earning his own money.

Mario’s infectious smile and genuine demeanor left a lasting impact on those who met him. Whether it was the bank tellers, the  staff where he lived, or a stranger on the street, he made everyone feel special. He had an incredible memory for numbers, never forgetting a single family member's birthday—even if others did, and knowing almost 'to the penny' how much money he had in his wallet at any time!

A sharp dresser with a keen attention to detail, Mario had runway-worthy style, and a shoe collection that rivaled his sister Vanessa's,  and he carried himself with the confidence to match that style. He was 'fancy'... a self-proclaimed ladies’ man, often speaking about his girlfriend while making sure to set respectful boundaries, presenting himself as a distinguished older gentleman. His quiet yet authoritative presence was one of consistency and charm.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Friday March 14, 2025 from 8pm to 9pm, followed by the processional of the family 9am at Christ Baptist Church, 1509 Church Ln, Philadelphia, PA 19141.  Mario's Funeral Service follow after the viewing.

Interment will be held in Rolling Green Memorial Park, 1008 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382.
