Robert Stephen “Steve” Barrett fondly known as “Sanka Babes” “Root” or “The Judge”, 74, of Oreland, PA, passed away on June 12, 2025.
Born on September 13, 1950 in Chestnut Hill to Edith (Hastings) Barrett and Robert Barrett, Steve was raised with a deep sense of responsibility, fairness, and compassion—values that would guide him through a lifelong career in public service. He graduated from Springfield High School (1969), earned his undergraduate degree from Penn State University (1973), and went on to receive his law degree from the University of Toledo (1976).
Steve began his professional life as a solicitor for Montgomery County and later served with distinction as a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas. Most of his time on the bench was spent in Family Court, with a meaningful period in Juvenile Court, where he brought empathy and insight to every case.
Outside of his work, Steve was a devoted family man. He loved coaching his children, Kate and Ryan, in youth sports, and found great joy in family trips and his home in Ocean City, New Jersey. A lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State football, Steve rarely missed a game. He also had a profound love for dogs, sharing his life with many beloved companions over the years—Moon Dog, Jenny, Sadie, Tess, Cece, Hailey, and Lily.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Gwen Barrett; his daughter Kate Morgner (Barrett) and her husband J. Morgner; his son Ryan Barrett and his fiancé Madison Henry; his four cherished grandchildren: Barrett, Emerson, Brooks, and Quinn, and his sister Leslie Nylund (Barrett). He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Robert.
A visitation will be held from 9:00–10:00 AM on Friday, June 20, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 7020 Camp Hill Rd, Fort Washington, PA 19034. All are welcome.
