Thomas Elmer Hoover, of Estero, FL (formerly of Doylestown, PA) passed away peacefully on May 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife, Mary (née Elliott), with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage, and their three sons.
Born August 13, 1936 in Philadelphia, Tom attended Northeast Catholic High School and earned an Associate's degree in Electronics Technology at Temple University, graduating in 1965. In 1959, Tom enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served in Germany until 1961 and completed his Army duties in 1964.
Tom’s electrical and mechanical engineering skills were as legendary in his family as was his unwillingness to accept defeat on repairing anything. In 1973, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to found ATR Systems Inc., providing workforce management solutions to businesses across the Philadelphia area. He was a longstanding member of the National Time Equipment Association and of the St. Joseph’s Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Doylestown, PA. In recent years, he spent several hours a week helping the homeless at the Salvation Army.
Energized to help those he loved, Tom was a man of action in his show of support, from fixing a dishwasher to heralding family accomplishments. Whether it was a cap or t-shirt, Tom was the proud representative for his children’s and grandchildren’s schools, sports, places of work, and other activities. Many of Tom’s happiest times were at the shore. As a devout Catholic, Tom lived his faith daily and delighted as his family members received their sacraments and grew in their faith.
Tom was a 40-year resident of Doylestown, PA before he and Mary retired to Florida in 2010. They returned to Doylestown every summer and he never missed an opportunity to enjoy a powdered cream donut from Maryanne Pastry Shoppe. In retirement, cruises were their favorite way to travel. The pair enjoyed their last European journey in the fall of 2022.
Tom was devoted to Mary, as she was to him. Their qualities complemented each other, whether on the dance floor, in the kitchen, or in the office at ATR Systems. With their shared and independent interests, and love for faith, family, baseball, and a good laugh, they were always a team.
Tom, and his quick-witted, self-deprecating humor, will be forever missed by his wife, Mary, his children Gary (Ellen) Hoover, of Charlotte, NC, Christopher (Celinda) Hoover, of Lower Gwynedd, PA, and Michael (Laura) Hoover, of Doylestown, PA, as well as his nine grandchildren; Nora, Gavin, Jack, Corinne, Reid, Nathaniel, Grant, Austin, and Wyatt. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Anna Hoover, as well as his siblings, Eunice Dixon, Donald Hoover, Patricia Covello, and Steven Hoover.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass on Saturday May 20, 2023 at 1pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Church, 235 E State St, Doylestown, PA 18901. Viewing in church from 12pm to 12:45pm.
Interment will be on Tuesday May 30, 2023 at 9:45am at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown PA.
