William Joseph Cunningham (Bill) passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on the morning of November 17, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born to Frank and Ruth Mack Cunningham in Mount Airy, PA and graduated from LaSalle High School and LaSalle University. His maternal grandfather was Connie Mack, owner and manager of the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1956, Bill was a bat boy for the A’s, which was one of his favorite memories. He worked for 20 years at William H. Rorer, makers of Maalox, and participated in club sports there. He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, and Sixers. After his retirement, he became a bus driver for the Upper Dublin School District, where he was popular with all his young charges. Bill also loved caring for, transporting, and cheering on his five local grandchildren, which he did on a regular basis. Family was very important to Bill.
Bill is survived by his daughters Linda Cunningham Puia (Jim) and their three children; Quinn Cunningham Selby (Sean) and their two children; and a son, William Jr. (Cecilia) and their family. Two sisters, Kathleen Cunningham Kiem (Wayne) and Alice Cunningham, also survive. Bill was predeceased by son Brant Cunningham and brothers Frank and Connie Cunningham.
All his life Bill said that when he died, he wanted a party for everyone to laugh and have a drink to celebrate what he considered to be a fortunate life. Covid-19 makes a party impossible at this time, but his family hopes everyone who knew Bill will lift a glass in his memory in the safety of their own homes. If you wish to remember Bill through a donation, please consider Special Olympics Pennsylvania, 2570 Boulevard of the Generals #124, Norristown, PA 19403.
