William J. McCann

William (Billy) J. McCann formerly of Scranton (Green Ridge) died Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at home surrounded by his family and loved ones.  Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late William J. and Mary E. Leyh McCann.

His is survived by his wife, Ann, of 49 years, his sister Janice McLane and her husband Paul, his daughter Kristy McCann Flynn and her husband William, Jeannie Bryers and her husband Nicholas, his two granddaughters, Noelle and Genevieve Bryers, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Joyce Occhipinti.

Billy was a graduate of Technical High School, class of 1974.  Prior to his retirement, he worked at Affiliated Foods and the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center.  He was a member of the Teamsters Local 229, the Irish Americans Club, and bartended throughout the  years enjoying friendly chatter with anyone that would listen.

Billy was a loyal fan of all things New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, and Notre Dame.  Known as “GP” by his grandchildren whom he treasured; Billy adored the simple times spent with them.  In his final months, he and Annie enjoyed life in Ocean City, NJ, a location where he vacationed and spent countless hours on the beach.  He will be missed and forever cherished by his wife, children and grandchildren, who wish him peace after many years of illness.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Saturday, September 6, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Ave, Scranton, PA 18509. Funeral Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m.  Interment at Cathedral Cemetery, 1708 Oram St, Scranton, PA 18504.
